The KDE Project has recently made an announcement regarding the release

The KDE Project has recently made an announcement regarding the release of the latest version of their Plasma desktop environment for GNU/Linux distributions. The KDE Plasma 5.27, which is a significant release, introduces several new features and improvements.

New Features in KDE Plasma 5.27

One of the most notable features of KDE Plasma 5.27 is the new Plasma Welcome app. This app is designed to assist newcomers to the KDE Plasma desktop environment in configuring various aspects easily and quickly. With this app, users can now enable Plasma Vaults, connect their mobile devices or online accounts, add more apps, and do much more.

Another great feature that comes with KDE Plasma 5.27 is the tiling support. This feature is specifically targeted at those who use a large monitor. Tiling can be enabled and configured by using the keyboard shortcut Meta(Super)+T. Additionally, users can choose from three layouts available, and by holding Shift and dragging a window to the edge of the screen, it can be placed in the tiled layout.

Improvements in KDE Plasma 5.27

KDE Plasma 5.27 has also significantly improved the multi-monitor support. The update adds a Display Configuration widget by default in the system tray area, which makes it easier to quickly change the screen layout and other settings.

For fans of Flatpak apps, the good news is that KDE Plasma now comes with Flatpak permissions settings integrated into the System Settings app. This integration allows users to have complete control over their Flatpak apps.

Furthermore, the Digital Clock popup’s calendar now supports the Hebrew calendar. Users can enable this feature by navigating to Digital Clock Settings > Calendar > Alternate Calendar > Hebrew Calendar. Additionally, the update includes a revamped Color Picker app, an improved Plasma Calculator widget, and various Plasma Wayland improvements such as the ability to send pen tilt and rotation events to apps.

The System Settings app has also received some notable enhancements. Specifically, the Icons, Launch Feedback, Shortcuts, and Window Switcher pages have all been improved. The “Highlight Changed Settings” button has also been moved to the hamburger menu to streamline the UI.

Future of KDE Plasma 5.27

With the release of KDE Plasma 5.27, the KDE Project will now focus its efforts on the upcoming KDE Plasma 6 series, which should be available later this year. However, the good news is that KDE Plasma 5.27 is an LTS (Long-Term Support) release, which means it will receive updates for a couple of years.

The KDE Plasma 5.27 update will be available in the stable software repositories of various popular GNU/Linux distributions, such as KDE neon, openSUSE Tumbleweed, Arch Linux, or Kubuntu, in the coming days. With its new features, improved functionality, and long-term support, KDE Plasma 5.27 is a great update for KDE Plasma users.
